The pilots’ associations are actively trying to diversify and attract qualified minorities.

All four pilot associations have scholarship programs in place. They currently offer 10 scholarships, at $16,000 per year for a total annual expenditure of $160,000 toward educating under-represented populations.

LRPA has both female and African-American commissioned members and apprentices.

The Lake Charles Pilots recently awarded a full scholarship to Don F. Briscoe, a senior at St. Louis Catholic High School of Lake Charles.
The New Orleans Baton Rouge Steamship Pilots Association (NOBRA) has awarded three scholarships to qualified minorities for the 2002-2003 academic year. Edwin Compass and Atlantis White will attend Texas A & M University at Galveston Maritime Program.
Marlon D. Guillory, a graduate of McNeese State University, will be attending school at SUNY Maritime College in New York.
The Bar Pilots chose Pierre Songy Beard of New Orleans as their scholarship recipient for Texas A & M University. Beard, who graduated from Isidore Newman School in 2002, was awarded by his classmates as the most esteemed member of their graduating class.
The Lake Charles Pilots also recently hired their first African-American pilot. Captain Dean Doe, of Newport News, Virginia has begun training as an apprentice pilot.
